Lou Gehrig, nicknamed the “Iron Horse”, played 2,139 consecutive games for the New York Yankees from 1925-1939. He was diagnosed with ALS in 1939, forcing him to take himself out of the lineup. He died eighteen months later, in 1941, at the age of 39.
